What are the standards for License plate?

Since 2009, all vehicle registration plates, regardless of vehicle type and whether new or used, are listed in the SIV (Vehicle Registration System). In order to correspond to this new registration system imposed by the Ministry of the Interior and allow their approval, they must meet specific standards.

Features of an approved license plate

First of all, for a license plate to comply with regulations and be approved, it must be correctly attached and visible , so that it can be read at a distance of at least 20 meters from the vehicle.
In addition, it must have been carried out by a professional , namely a mechanic or a manufacturer of plates for example.

To be compliant, it is mandatory that the plate  conforms to an approved model and the approval number must be entered on it. It must also respect the rules of size and arrangement of elements (height and spacing of letters and numbers, shape of dashes in particular) imposed by legislation and the registration number must be noted on one or two lines at most.

The number written on the license plate must be the same as the one written on the registration certificate  (in other words, your registration certificate ).

Be aware that it is not really possible to change the background and shape of your license plates. Certain elements can however be modified according to your wishes (the material of the plate, the logo of the region…).

The new license plate must have a territorial identifier . The latter consists of the official logo of a region and the department number . These data are written on the right side of the license plate, on a blue background and must be identical to the front and rear of the vehicle.

If the plate is in poor condition or the registration number is no longer readable, it is imperative to have it redone. Otherwise, it could lead to a sanction.

Penalties for non-compliance with regulations

An illegible, non-compliant license plate or simply the absence of a license plate results in a 4th class fine as well as a fine :

  • Minority of 100 $ (within three days)
  • Flat rate of 150 $ (within 45 days)
  • Increased by 400 $ (after 45 days)
  • Maximum of 800 $ (if going to court)

These may be change according to respective states, please check the updated on official website.

However, in the event of an unreadable or non-compliant license plate or in the absence of a plate, no point is withdrawn from the driving license .
